THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 8, 2011) – On Wednesday night, the Maritime football team gathered at the Hard Rock Café Yankee Stadium to celebrate this past 2011 season and hand out the team awards. The year was a fantastic one on the field for the Privateers, as the team finished the season with an 8-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) action.

The evening began with a highlight video of all the big plays from the 2011 season, which was made by seventh-year assistant coach, defensive coordinator Vincent DiGaetano. This was followed by a buffet-style dinner. Then, head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes, who served as the emcee for the night, took over the microphone and talked to the team about how proud he was of the performances they put forth together during the season. After this, it was time for the awards to be given out.

One notable award on the night was the Coach Charlie Muncsh Outstanding Achievement Award, which was first established and given out last season. Maritime Football alum Paul Pedretti ('81), who played under Munsch, was on hand to give out the award. The winner of the 2011 Coach Muncsh Award was senior Jason Burry (Attica, N.Y./Attica)-DE (Attica, N.Y./Attica). Burry recorded 12 tackles for the Privateer defense, including seven for total losses of 37 yards and one sack. He also recovered two fumbles, one of which was returned 53 yards for a touchdown against Mount Ida.

The Special Teams MVP Award went to freshman Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet)-RB (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet), who stepped up big to become the primary kick and punt returner for Maritime this season. He averaged 11.3 yards on 13 punt returns with a long of 50 yards, while averaging 24.7 yards on 10 kick returns with a long of 59 yards. He was also named the Special Teams Player of the Week during Week Eight. Caneparo was ranked nationally in both punt return (33rd) and kickoff return (34th).

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) was named the team's Offensive MVP. Trodden was 54-for-109 in completions for a total of 770 yards with three touchdowns on the season. He was also the team's second-leading rusher with 485 yards and two TDs on the ground. Trodden earned ECFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after his performance in the Week Three victory over Kings Point.

For the Defensive MVP Award, the Maritime coaches chose the two-time ECFC Defensive Player of the Year Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury)-LB (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury). Barnes once again led the Privateers and was the third-highest tackler in the ECFC with 88 total tackles (68 solo and 20 assisted). He had nine tackles for losses of a combined 24 yards and three sacks. Barnes recorded two interceptions, two pass deflections, two quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles.

The biggest award of the night, the overall team MVP, went to a senior who set many school records over his four seasons as fullback for the Privateers. Senior Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) was the recipient. He finished the season with his first-ever 1,000-yard rushing campaign with 1,088 yards, a mark that ranked him 29th in the country with 108.8 yards per game. He scored 13 rushing touchdowns and was Maritime's leading scorer with 78 points. Spanopoulos was twice named ECFC Offensive Player of the Week during the 2011 season and wound up on the All-ECFC First Team Offense, as voted on by the league's eight coaches.
