Introduced for the 2018-19 academic year, the Faculty Liaison Program at Maritime College has been developed in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the college's academic and athletic departments. This program supports the college's new strategic plan emphasizing leadership development through faculty engagement, while fostering a vibrant student life experience.
Faculty members volunteer to partner with athletic teams in a supportive way outside of the classrooms. In addition to attending competitions, Faculty Liaisons periodically join team members for meals, practices and other team functions.
Program objectives include:
- To enhance connections between student-athletes and faculty members by providing additional mentoring for student-athletes, particularly with management of academic responsibilities and communication with professors.
- To connect faculty and athletic staff and promote an understanding of their respective challenges, responsibilities and approaches to teaching and working with students.
- To support the academic mission of the college, while also increasing understanding of the ways in which intercollegiate athletics enhances the educational mission of the College.
- To strengthen the relationships between student-athletes, professors, and coaches beyond the classroom.
- To provide faculty an opportunity to meet college service requirements for promotion and reappointment.
