THROGGS NECK, NY – Defender
Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) of the Maritime College men's lacrosse team has been recognized as an honorable mention All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). The Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Year, he was also a First Team All-Skyline selection this season.
Weigand started all 19 games this season, his first at Maritime after joining the team as a graduate transfer, and played lockdown defense while generally facing the opponent's top offensive threat. He collected 105 ground balls, sixth-most for a single-season in program history, while ranking fifth in the conference with 5.53 ground balls per game. Weigand also caused 28 turnovers and scored three goals, as the Privateers reached the Skyline Championship Game.
"Matthew made an immediate impact on our team," Head Coach
Justin Manjares said. "His contributions on and off the field are what it takes to be an All-American, and it's great to see his outstanding season rewarded. He's one of the best players ever to wear the Maritime jersey."
Players are nominated by their coaches, with the USILA All-American Committee then choosing the All-Americans and major award winners. Weigand is Maritime's first All-American since Matt DeMeo earned an honorable mention nod in 2019.
Maritime posted a 13-6 record in 2023, including a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play during the regular season. The Privateers advanced to the Skyline Championship Game for the fourth consecutive time, falling to Merchant Marine.
