Kean Rallies Late to Defeat Maritime

UNION, NJ – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team traveled to Kean on Wednesday.  In a back-and-forth affair that featured seven ties and four lead changes, the Cougars (6-5) scored two late goals to notch a 12-11 victory over the Privateers (2-5) at Kean Alumni Stadium.

After Kean jumped out to a 3-0 advantage, Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) and Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) brought Maritime within 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.  Hannaford then notched a man-up tally five minutes into the second quarter, giving the Privateers their first lead, 4-3.  However, the Cougars went back in front, 5-4, on Miguel Lontok's goal with three seconds left until halftime.

It was tied at 7-7 after the third quarter, but Kean started the fourth quarter on a 3-1 run to go ahead 10-8.  Maritime responded with three consecutive goals, though, and the second of back-to-back Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY) tallies put the Privateers in front 11-10 with 5:09 remaining.  The Cougars tied it a minute later on Aarin Arbore's goal, then Arbore assisted on Jacob Dvoor's tally with 2:41 left to give Kean the lead.  That would prove to be the game-winner, as Maritime suffered its second straight one-goal defeat.

Hannaford finished with four goals, while Weigand had his first career hat trick.  McCarvill recorded three points on two goals and an assist, and Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) distributed four assists.  Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) collected a team-best six ground balls and added three caused turnovers.  James O'Malley (Northport, NY) (0-1), meanwhile, made his first start in net and was credited with 12 saves to go along with six ground balls.

For the Cougars, Arbore led the way with seven points.  He scored three times and also handed out four assists.  Dvoor notched five points on two goals and three assists, while Lontok finished with three goals and an assist.  Christian Updale picked up a game-high seven ground balls, and Jake Gruzas caused three turnovers.  Goalkeeper Nick Paterno (5-4) made 14 saves, including a pair in the final two minutes that sealed the win.

On Saturday, the Privateers return to New Jersey for a 12 p.m. matchup at Montclair State (8-1).  It will be Maritime's final game before the start of Skyline Conference play.
