Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Privateers Come Up Short at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, NJ – On Saturday, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team traveled to Montclair State for its final non-conference game before the start of Skyline Conference play.  The contest was tied at 3-3 after the first quarter before the Red Hawks (9-2) went on a 7-0 run that proved to be the difference in their 15-9 victory over the Privateers (2-6) at Sprague Field.

After Montclair State scored the first two goals of the contest, Maritime pulled even on goals by Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) and Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY).  Ryan Vierbuchen put the Red Hawks back in front, but Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) responded with an equalizer at the 1:48 mark of the first quarter.  Montclair State outscored the Privateers 4-0 in the second quarter, though, to extend the margin to 7-3 at intermission.

The Red Hawks increased their lead to 10-3 before Hannaford snapped Maritime's scoring drought with two tallies a minute apart.  That started a 4-1 rally for the Privateers, and Thomas McCarvill's (Port Washington, NY) goal with 8:24 left in the fourth quarter brought Maritime within four at 12-8.  However, Montclair State countered with two straight scores to push its advantage back to six, 14-8, en route to a 15-9 triumph.

Hannaford notched five points on four goals and an assist.  He also collected three ground balls.  McCarvill found the back of the net twice to go along with three ground balls, while Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) went 10-for-17 on faceoffs and picked up a team-best seven ground balls.  Mahood and Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) added five ground balls apiece, as the Privateers set a season-high with 41 ground balls as a team.  James O'Malley (Northport, NY) (0-2) started in net and took the loss.  He made three saves before giving way to Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY), who stopped two Red Hawks shots over the final 23 minutes.

Brian Kelly had seven points for Montclair State.  He finished with five goals and two assists.  Jonathan Slusser also found the back of the net four times, while Vierbuchen recorded two goals and two assists.  Carter Finnen gathered nine ground balls and Corbin Quintero caused three turnovers to go along with six ground balls.  Jacob Holicki added six ground balls of his own.  In addition to picking up seven ground balls, goalkeeper Nicholi Halse (9-2) was credited with 14 saves.

Maritime opens its Skyline slate by visiting Manhattanville (2-5, 0-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
