Uzakewicz Tallies 100th Point As Maritime Snaps Skid

PURCHASE, NY – Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) became the newest member of the Maritime College men's lacrosse program's 100-point club on Wednesday night, as the Privateers (3-6, 1-0 Skyline) began Skyline Conference play with an 11-5 win over Manhattanville (2-6, 0-1 Skyline) at GoValiants.com Field.  With the victory, its ninth straight against the Valiants, Maritime ended its six-game losing streak.

Needing one point to reach 100, Uzakewicz got it with his goal at the 1:25 mark of the second quarter.  That tally knotted the score at 4-4 and capped a back-and-forth half where neither side held an advantage of more than one goal.  There were four ties and three lead changes in the opening 30 minutes.

After Frank Tallerico put Manhattanville in front 5-4 just 1:15 into the second half, the Privateers shut the Valiants out for the remainder of the contest.  Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) tied it at 5-5 before Uzakewicz assisted on three straight tallies to put Maritime in front, 8-5.  He later capped the scoring in the fourth quarter of the Privateers' 11-5 triumph.

Uzakewicz ended up with five points on two goals and three assists.  Hannaford also notched five points (three goals, two assists) to go along with four ground balls.  Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) had three goals and three ground balls, while Peter Horstmann (Lindenhurst, NY) added a hat trick of his own.  Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY) went 13-for-15 on faceoffs and collected a team-best 10 ground balls.  Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE), meanwhile, picked up seven ground balls.  Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (3-4) got the start in net and made 12 saves.

Tallerico scored twice for Manhattanville, and Nick Corace tallied three points on a goal and two assists.  Francisco Rosas secured four ground balls, while Mike Mooney recorded four caused turnovers.  Valiants goalkeeper Joe Ulzheimer (2-6) was credited with 13 saves.

On Friday, Maritime concludes its non-conference slate with a 7 p.m. visit to Stevens (7-2).  The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 25, but was postponed due to the winter storm.
