BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's and women's swimming teams each registered Skyline Conference wins on Friday night, as the men's team defeated host Sarah Lawrence in dual action while the women's team split their double-dual with the Privateers beating St. Joseph's (LI) but falling to host Sarah Lawrence.
The men's team picked up the victory on the host Gryphons by the score of 130-51, while the women's team knocked off St. Joseph's (LI) by the score of 125-64. Maritime's women's team fell to Sarah Lawrence, 112-81.
In addition to the team success with one victory apiece, the Privateers also had another highlight with junior
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) once again breaking her program record in the 1,000 freestyle, which she set earlier this year at Lehman.
Women's Recap
The women's team had the top time in three events competing in a double-dual with Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph's (LI). The Privateers were led by Aaron, who had two wins with one coming in the 1,000 freestyle and the other in the 500 freestyle; freshman
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) also notched a win in the 100 freestyle.
Freshman Margaret Stinson teamed up with junior
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), Aaron and fellow junior
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) in the 200 medley relay as Maritime finished with a time of 2:12.59. Sarah Lawrence won the event, while Maritime's second relay took third overall. The Golden Eagles did not have an entry in the event.
Aaron's record-setting performance was next in the 1,000 freestyle as she registered a new program record for the second time this season with a 12:10.31 to win the event. Sophomore
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) took second in the 200 freestyle with a 2:30.10, while Brow led the Privateers with a second place finish in the 50 freestyle with a 27.63.
Zink took second in the 200 individual medley with a 2:33.89, while Stinson was the fourth to finish at 2:52.53. Davis led the Privateers in the 100 butterfly at 1:23.47, which was followed by Brow's win in the 100 freestyle at a quick pace of 1:00.37. Stinson led Maritime in the 100 backstroke at 1:14.87 behind one swimmer each from Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph's (LI).
Aaron recorded her second win of the night in the 500 freestyle at 5:52.92, which was over 11 seconds better than the top swimmer from Sarah Lawrence. Individual competition came to a close in the 100 breaststroke as junior
Megan Alicea (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) took third overall at 1:21.34.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Maritime's top group was disqualified, allowing the team's second relay group of freshman
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip), sophomore
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep), Stinson and Alicea to finish first for the Privateers with a time of 2:12.93.
Men's Recap
The Men's team had wins in all but one of the 11 events contested on Friday evening, as Sarah Lawrence snuck out a close victory in the 100 freestyle by 0.06 seconds.
Maritime won the 200 medley relay uncontested as senior
Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood), junior
John Accetta (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg), freshman Benjamin Loutzenhiser, and senior
Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) won the event with a time of 1:50.20. Maritime's second and third entries swept the remaining points in favor of the Privateers.
Sophomore
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) won the 1,000 freestyle uncontested as well with a time of 11:07.74 to win the event. Freshmen
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and
Derrick Kennedy (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) took second and third for the Privateers. Sophomore
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) recorded a win in the 200 freestyle as he touched the wall in 2:00.20, followed by junior
Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) with a 2:04.95.
Junior
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) secured Maritime's next win in the 50 freestyle, driving past the field with a 22.69. Loutzenhiser won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.60, while junior
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) picked up the team's next win in the 100 butterfly at 58.01. Sarah Lawrence got the win in the 100 freestyle, but Wu was just off the pace in second place with a 50.68.
Katz picked up an individual win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.53, with sophomore
Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and junior
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) taking second and third. Maritime followed with another sweep, this time in the 500 freestyle, as Kelleher won with a time of 5:29.14, followed by DeYoung and freshman
Mark Shekhter (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).
With the win in hand, Maritime swam exhibitions the rest of the night but Accetta did with the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.63, with sophomores
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) and
Matt Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) taking second and third. Maritime closed out the night with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as Marino, Troy, Kelleher, and Wu secured the win with a dominant time of 1:33.97
Maritime will be back in action on Saturday, when the team travels to Merchant Marine for the 2017 Merchant Marine Invitational.
