Swimming Posts Pair of Wins in Conference Dual Meet Action at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Maritime women's and men's swimming teams each picked up wins on Monday evening, coasting past the Old Westbury Panthers at the Clark Athletic Center on Long Island. The women's team won by a score of 114-76, while the men's team posted a 128-51 victory.
 
The men's team scored another dominant win by registering the fastest times in all 11 of the events on the men's side, while the women's team scored wins in eight of the 11 events including both relays.
 
Leading the way for the men's team was sophomore Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), who had two wins on the night in the 1,000 and 500 freestyle events. The Privateers also got wins from seniors Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood), juniors Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), John Accetta (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg), and Spencer Blass (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), sophomore Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach), and freshman Benjamin Loutzenhiser (Erie, Pa./General McLane).
 
Junior Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) led the women's team with two individual wins in both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Juniors Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) also scored first place finishes along with freshmen Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Margaret Stinson (Washington, D.C./School without Walls).
 
Women's Recap
The women's team scored a win in the 200 medley relay with Stinson, sophomore Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep), Davis and junior Megan Alicea (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) securing a six-second win in the event with a time of 2:21.00.
 
Davis followed with a win in the 1,000 freestyle at 14:37.28 as she was the only Privateer in the pool for the event. Zink notched a close win over Brow in the 200 freestyle with Zink touching the wall at 2:18.00, and Brow a close second at 2:18.52. Sophomore Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) led the Privateers in the 50 freestyle as she took second place overall with a 28.38.
 
Aaron scored the first of her two wins on the night with a 2:34.75 in the 200 individual medley. Brow scored a first place finish in the 100 butterfly at 1:16.46, while Davis was third at 1:26.34. Stinson followed with her lone win of the night with a first place finish in the 100 freestyle followed by Thompson, as Stinson notched a 1:04.60 and Thompson picked up a 1:06.66.
 
After Zink took second in the backstroke, Aaron followed with her second win of the night in the 500 freestyle as she registered a 5:59.27, besting her closest competition by over 21 seconds. Stinson took fourth with a 7:24.93. Neely capped off the individual events with a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke at 1:37.53, with freshman Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) right behind at 1:43.73.
 
To close out the night the quartet of Thompson, Zink, Aaron and Brow scored a 17-second win in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:54.66.

Men's Recap
The men's team opened the night with a dominant showing in the 200 medley relay with the top-three finishes in the event to sweep all 16 points. Loutzenhiser, Accetta, Marino and Russell paced the field with a time of 1:48.77.
 
Kelleher followed with a win in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:12.83, followed by freshman Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) with an 11:26.07, and junior Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) with a 12:37.13 as the Privateers took the top three positions. Durrua followed with a victory in the 200 freestyle at 2:02.86 with freshman Derrick Kennedy (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) and sophomore Brendan Raffay (Byram Township, N.J./Lenape Valley) taking second and third.
 
Russell coasted to another victory in the 50 freestyle at 23.87, with freshman Seth Champlin (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) in second and junior Merrick Kovatch (Frankford, Del./Indian River) in third. Marino posted a time of 2:16.26 in the 200 individual medley, as junior Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) and freshman Tommy Murray (Paramus, N.J./Bergen Catholic) took second and third. Loutzenhiser registered the win in the 100 butterfly at 58.48, as freshman Tyler Verheyleweghen (Tarpon Springs, Fla./Tarpon Springs) and Durrua rounded out another 1-2-3 finish.
 
Blass won the 100 freestyle in 52.40, while senior James Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) took second with a sub-minute time of 54.62. Junior Matt Crowley was fourth with a 1:15.46 in the 100 freestyle. Katz was first to finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.00, followed by sophomore Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and senior Kevin Gilroy (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North).
 
With the win in hand Maritime swam exhibitions the rest of the way beginning with the 500 as Kelleher posted the top time of 5:23.35. Junior Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and sophomore Logan Riales (Bonham, Texas/Maury (Va.)) were top-three as well. Accetta recorded the top time in the breaststroke at 1:08.20, with sophomore Matt Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) in second, junior Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) in third and senior Adrian Klein (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Gilmer Country (W. Va.)) in fourth.
 
The Privateers wrapped up the night with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as Kelleher, Blas, Troy and Marino coasted to a 12-second win posting a time of 1:36.39.
 
Maritime's men's (4-1, 3-0 Skyline) and women's (5-1, 3-0 Skyline) will be back in action to open a busy weekend of competition. The Privateers will head to Bronxville, N.Y. and Sarah Lawrence College with the Gryphons, while the women's team will compete in a double-dual with both the Gryphons and the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's (LI) beginning at 7 p.m. this Friday.
