THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's and women's swimming & diving teams began the 2024-25 season on Wednesday night by welcoming Lehman to the Riesenberg Aquatics Center. The Privateer men posted a 92-60 win, while the women's meet came down to the final event—the 200 yard freestyle relay. Maritime touched first in that relay to claim the overall victory, 69-66.
Lehman had a 55-47 lead with two events remaining on the women's program. However,
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY) won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:20.93, and
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) placed fourth in the event (1:33.36) to trim Maritime's deficit to 62-58 heading into the final relay. The quartet of
Paige Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ),
Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY),
Julia Augello (Whitestone, NY) and
Aisling Donnelly (New City, NY) dominated the race, posting a time of 2:24.12 to clinch the season-opening come-from-behind triumph.
In addition to her win in the 100 breaststroke, Barriteau had a second-place effort in the 100 yard butterfly (1:13.43).
Oceana Elefante (Sayville, NY), meanwhile, finished first in the 50 yard freestyle (29.03) and second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:20.69). Barriteau, Elefante and Devaney teamed with
Kirsten Argueta (Englewood, NJ) on the victorious 200 yard medley relay squad.
Maritime notched five event wins on the men's side.
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY) and
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) both notched two individual victories. Klimek was first in the 100 butterfly (1:03.31) and 1000 yard freestyle (12:15.86), while Hayes was triumphant in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.06) and 200 yard individual medley (2:06.95). They also joined with
Victor Pineda (Bronx, NY) and
Liam McManus (Islip, NY) for the win in the 200 medley relay.
On Monday, the Privateers host their second straight home meet to start the season when Baruch's men and women visit the Riesenberg Aquatics Center. The first event is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
