Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team travelled to nearby Purchase College on Tuesday evening, taking on the Purchase Panthers in a key Skyline Conference showdown. Neither side was able to score through the full 110 minutes played as the sides ended in a scoreless draw.
Maritime was led by sophomore
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), who notched his fifth shutout of the season, as he registered three saves on the night. He was assisted by the defensive unit of juniors
Joe Merendino (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling),
Chris O'Connor (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore),
Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem), and sophomore
Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), while freshman
Jerome Eastwood (Houston, Texas/Stratford) added key minutes in reserve on the defensive line.
Offensively the Privateers were led by senior
Harry Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandenmeulen) and freshman
Anthony Palazzolo (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman), who both had three shots in the game with five of their combined six shots on target. Senior
Corey Cartano (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson) and junior
Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) both had two shots apiece, while Forrest, and sophomores
Nicholas Ciacca (Bologna, Italy/Pelham Memorial (N.Y.)),
Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and
Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) each had one shot apiece.
As a team, Maritime had 14 shots while Purchase took just eight, the Purchase goalkeeper made nine saves on the night to Rodriguez' three. Maritime led 5-3 in corner kicks through full time.
The Privateers came out of the gates strong with a pair of shots in the opening 11 minutes. The Privateers mustered three more shots in the half, including two on target but were unable to break through in the opening stanza.
Forrest, Cartano, Palazzolo and Olthoff-Cusumano each had shots in the second half of regulation, but again were not able to convert as the Privateers and Purchase went to overtime with nothing to show on the scoreboard.
Palazzolo and Colucci had shots in the first overtime period, while Gallt added his second shots of the night in the second overtime period with no success as the teams settled for the scoreless draw.
Maritime (11-3-2, 5-2-1 Skyline) records its second tie of the season, and first since the team's 2-2 draw with St. John Fisher on September 10. Maritime will be off until next Wednesday, as the Privateers return home to Reinhart Field for another important Skyline match with the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins, slated to begin at 7 p.m.
Purchase (6-7-2, 3-2-2 Skyline) will be on the road this Friday, when the team pays a visit to the Yeshiva Maccabees for a 12 p.m. start. The match will be played at Votee Park in Teaneck, N.J.
