Privateers Eliminated From Playoff Contention In Heartbreaker

FARMINGDALE, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team entered Wednesday night's game at Farmingdale needing a win to qualify for the Skyline Conference Tournament.  So did the Rams.  In a wild finish that was worthy of a winner-take-all tilt, Farmingdale (5-8-4, 4-3-4 Skyline) got a 90th-minute goal to earn a 2-1 win at Rams Field to clinch the final playoff spot and eliminate the Privateers (8-5-3, 3-5-3 Skyline).

It was a 0-0 contest until the final minute of the first half, when Josue Corea put the Rams on the board.  Needing two tallies to keep its season going, Maritime nearly found an equalizer in the 71st minute.  An attempt by PJ Kakalos (Merrick, NY) was played off the goal line by the Farmingdale defense, however, then the Privateers couldn't convert after the ensuing corner kick.

With less than three minutes remaining, Maritime finally broke through.  Jonathan Toma (Massapequa, NY) played a cross to the left post that Kakalos headed to Finn Richmond (Cold Spring Harbor, NY), who tapped it in to level the score at 1-1.  A draw would've eliminated both teams, so each kept attacking, and Farmingdale broke the deadlock on a goal by Josue Granados with 45 seconds left.  That tally sent the Rams to the postseason and ended the Privateers' playoff hopes.

Richmond scored for the third straight game and the fourth time this season.  Goalkeeper Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) (8-5-3) was credited with four saves in the losing effort.  Farmingdale goalkeeper Rocco Dispinseri (2-6-2), meanwhile, tallied seven saves.

Maritime's eight wins this season were its most since the 2019 campaign.  The Privateers ended up eighth in the final Skyline standings with 12 points.
