THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – For the final time in 2016 the Maritime swimming team was back in action at the Riesenberg Aquatic Center on Friday night. The Maritime men's swimming team picked up another league victory vs. Mount St. Mary by a 122-83 score. The women's team dropped both Mount St. Mary and St. Joseph's (LI), falling by a 140-56 score to the Knights and a 107.5-86.5 score to the Golden Eagles.
In their head-to-head battle with the Mount St. Mary's men's team, the Privateers scored wins in seven of 11 events including wins in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Freshman
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) led the way with a pair of wins in both the 1,000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. The Privateers also got wins from junior
Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), sophomore
Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock), and freshman
Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran).
For the women's team, it was sophomore
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), who scored the Privateers lone second place finish of the night in the three-way meet with the Knights and Golden Eagles. The 200 yard medley relay quartet of Zink, juniors
Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and
Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled), along with sophomore
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) also scored a second place finish in the first event of the evening.
Soulagnet, Zink, Aaron and Stanton took second place in the 200 medley relay to kick off the night for the women's swimming team. The foursome finished with a time of 2:09.08.
Soulagnet was back in the water for the next event as she took third place overall in the 1,000 freestyle, which was the first time competing in the event since joining the team in 2014. Aaron finished third in the 200 freestyle with a 2:13.12. In the 50 freestyle, senior
Treasa Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) took fifth place with a 29.41, while freshman
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) finished sixth with a 30.50.
In the 200 individual medley, Zink scored the top Privateer time with a 2:38.65, while Thompson split the point with a Mount St. Mary swimmer as the pair both finished with a 3:03.16 in the event. Aaron finished fourth in the 100 butterfly with a 1:13.19, while Soulagnet finished her night with a 1:06.69 in the 100 freestyle.
Murphy collected a third place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:14.87, finishing ahead of both swimmers from St. Joseph's (LI) in the process of a third place finish overall. Stanton finished fourth in the 500 freestyle with a 6:27.81, while junior
Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) recorded an 8:02.55.
Zink picked up the team's lone second place finish of the night in an individual event as she registered a 1:21.54. Stanton was next for the Privateers finishing just behind Zink with a 1:25.10. The night concluded with the 200 freestyle relay, which saw Maritime take third overall at just over two minutes with a 2:00.75. Murphy and Thompson teamed up with senior
Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) and sophomore
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) for the time.
Russell and Truong teamed up with sophomore
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) and freshman
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) and scored the first win of the night for the men's team with a time of 1:47.37 in the opening relay. The second relay team for the Privateers featured Moriarty along with seniors
Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) and
Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg), and freshman
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach), as the foursome finished with a time of 1:52.38 for a second place finish.
Kelleher picked up an 18-second win in the 1,000 freestyle as he posted a 10:53.26; sophomore
Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) was third to the finish with an 11:55.01. Truong was up next in the 200 freestyle as he paced the field with a 1:53.44, finishing just ahead of the first Knight swimmer. Marino finished second in the 50 freestyle as he clocked in with a 23.00, which was a personal best for the sophomore.
Moriarty registered a second place finish in the 200 individual medley with a 2:10.56, followed by freshman
Matthew Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and sophomore
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep). Durrua scored another second place finish for the Privateers with a 58.21, which was a personal best for the rookie.
Russell got the Privateers back on top with a first place finish in the 100 freestyle as he touched the wall with a 52.03. Moriarty finished first in the 100 backstroke with a 1:00.66, followed by Murray with a 1:05.15, and freshman
Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) with a 1:08.61 as the trio swept the podium. Kelleher continued his dominance in distance events with a 5:15.19 in the 500 freestyle, as he collected a near 14-second victory.
Lewis led Maritime in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:10.96, just over one second off of his personal best in the event. Folan finished third with a 1:11.31 followed by junior
Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood) with a 1:13.53.
Russell, Truong, Kelleher and Marino secured a win in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:32.70, as they finished just 0.18 seconds ahead of the top Mount St. Mary quartet. Maritime's second and third relay teams took third and fourth place respectively to lock up the win for the Privateers.
With the conclusion of Friday's event, Maritime's men's team stands at 6-1 overall with a 4-1 record in conference meets heading into the winter break. The women's team is 4-5 overall with a 3-4 record in meets against Skyline teams. The Privateers will reconvene on Tuesday, January 17 for a head-to-head meet with the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) Bears at 6 p.m. from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center.
