THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College sailing team hosted its second event of the Spring—the Long Island Sound Invitational—on Saturday, April 4. The Privateers entered four boats in the regatta and two placed on the podium, including the duo of
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY), who took first overall.
Starck and Saharov were in third place entering the 10
th and final race, five points behind Maritime's second boat skipped by
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and three points behind a pair from Webb Institute. They also trailed in Race 10 before mounting a comeback and crossing the line first. Webb, meanwhile, finished fourth, giving both crews a final score of 30 points. The victory in Race 10 was Starck and Saharov's third, clinching the tiebreaker and the overall win. (Webb only had one race victory across the series.)
Lunati, meanwhile, had surged into the lead with three consecutive first-place showings in Races 7-9. He teamed with
Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) for the first eight races before she was replaced by
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY). In the last race, Lunati and Sarich overcame a poor start to regain contact with the field and finish ninth. That was enough to give them 33 total points and the third spot on the podium.
Overall, a Privateer duo won seven of the 10 races, with
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) earning the victory in Race 5. They ended up sixth in the final standings with 65 points.
Maritime's fourth squad was skipped by
Zalachi Robinson (Bronx, NY) in eight races and
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) for the other two. They were joined by
Christopher Taylor (Babylon, NY) (Races 1-6),
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) (Races 7-8) and
Christopher Zender (Sayville, NY). The "D" boat's best results were back-to-back fifth-place finishes in Races 7 & 8. The Privateers collected 111 total points, which was good for 12
th place.
This weekend, Maritime travels for a pair of competitions. The Privateers will head to Old Dominion for The Grant, where Maritime needs to finish in the top six to qualify for next weekend's America Trophy. Another group of sailors will be in Boston for the Oberg Open Fleet Race.
