Results: The Grant | Oberg Trophy
NORFOLK, VA – The Maritime College sailing team needed to place in the top six at The Grant on Saturday and Sunday, April 11-12 in order to qualify for this weekend's championship event. Mission accomplished. The Privateers took fifth overall at the regatta, hosted by Old Dominion University, securing qualification for the America Trophy.
Maritime was in qualifying position from the start, with the "A" crew of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) taking second in each of the first two races.
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY) added a first-place showing in Race 2 for the "B" boat. Starck and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) later earned two more wins in Races 5 & 6, as well as a pair of second-place results. Hartwell and Sarich, meanwhile, took third place in Race 13 of the "A" fleet.
Overall, the Privateers tallied 131 points across the 14-race series. Maritime finished just one point behind fourth-place Princeton. In the tightly-contested "B" division, the top four teams were separated by just five points, with the Privateers posting a total score of 48 points. The "A" team ended up sixth with 83 points.
In addition, Maritime sent another set of sailors to Boston for the Oberg Trophy, hosted by Northeastern. The Privateers were 16
th out of 18 teams with 622 total points. Maritime's best results were a pair of top 10 finishes by the "B" boat. Maritime fielded three entries in the regatta—with
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) sailing together on the "A" crew,
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) making up the "B" squad and
Joseph Herrick (Bay Shore, NY) skipping the "C" team. He was joined by
Zalachi Robinson (Bronx, NY) in the first four races and
Christopher Taylor (Babylon, NY) for Races 5-14.
Next weekend, the dinghy squad will compete at the America Trophy, which is the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Fleet Race Championship event. The regatta is being hosted by St. Mary's (MD) on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19.
