ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The Maritime College dinghy sailing team began its championship season with the America Trophy, the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Fleet Race Championship regatta, on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19. Competing against all of the top programs in the region for a spot at the National Championships, the Privateers finished 17
th overall in the event, which was hosted by St. Mary's (MD).
Maritime utilized four different combinations across the 14 races in the "A" boat.
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) served as the Privateers' skip for eight races, with
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) stepping in for two races and
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) skipping the last four.
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) sailed in the first four races with Hartwell before being replaced by
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) for the remainder of the competition.
In the "B" boat, meanwhile,
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) sailed together for the 10 races on Saturday. They had five top 10 finishes, highlighted by a fifth-place showing in Race 3. On Sunday, Maritime's "B" crew consisted of
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT), and the pair took 10
th in Race 11.
Overall, the Privateers tallied 379 points across the 28 total races. Maritime was 17
th in the "A" division with 227 points, while the "B" team's 152 points were good for 11
th place and just one point behind Columbia for 10
th in the fleet.
There is one regatta remaining on the Privateers' Spring schedule. Maritime makes the short trip to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for the annual Admiral's Cup on Saturday and Sunday.
