Results: MAISA Spring Women's Regatta | Vietor Trophy | J70 Invitational
KINGS POINT, NY – It was a busy weekend for the Maritime College sailing team on Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, with all three squads in action at different regattas. The Privateer women competed in the MAISA Spring Women's Regatta—their championship event—at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and finished in 11
th place overall. The coed and offshore squads, meanwhile, both headed to New London, CT, with the coed team taking part in the Vietor Trophy and the offshore sailors participating in their only regatta of the Spring campaign at the J70 Invitational.
At the MAISA Spring Women's Regatta, Maritime finished with a total score of 316 points after 14 races.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) skipped the "A" boat, where she was joined primarily by
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD).
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) replaced Wilson for the final two races. Ostapowicz & Wilson's best result was seventh place in Race 9. The "B" crew of
Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) also had a seventh place in Race 6.
Connecticut College hosted the Vietor Trophy, which was held in perfect conditions on the Thames River. In the "A" division, the duo of
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY) won two races (Race 3, Race 13) and added a second-place finish in Race 14. Overall, the Privateers ended up 11
th in the "A" fleet with 137 points. Starck also sailed four races with
Joseph Herrick (Bay Shore, NY).
In the "B" boat,
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) served as Maritime's skip for 10 of the 14 races, with
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) stepping in for the other four.
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) joined them on the crew. The Privateers notched a pair of fifth-place showings in Races 5 & 8, and ended up 11
th in the "B" division with 147 points. Maritime's combined score of 284 points was good for 13
th place.
Also competing on the Thames River, but going in the opposite direction, was the Privateers' offshore team. The crew of
Sebastian Lemaire (Moorestown, NJ) (skip),
Robert Wieczorek III (Greenport, NY),
Cecelia DeMallie (Naples, NY),
Edmund Morris (Bayside, NY) (Races 1-3, 12-15) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) (Races 4-11) ended up seventh overall with 98 points. Their top result was second place in Race 6 of the 15-race series.
This weekend, only the coed dinghy team will be in action. Maritime hosts the Long Island Sound Invitational, its second and final home regatta of the Spring, on Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5.
