THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College sailing team welcomed three other programs to Fort Schuyler on Saturday for the annual Admiral Moore Team Race. After three rounds of racing, the Privateers placed second overall with a 6-3 record. It was Maritime's first podium finish at its home regatta since 2018, when the Privateers also took second.
Despite a slight delay in the morning, the teams were able to complete three full round-robins, a total of nine races per squad. Maritime went 2-1 in each round, falling twice to Coast Guard and once against Fordham. The Privateers defeated Washington College in all three head-to-head matchups. Maritime, Coast Guard and Fordham ended up in a three-way tie for first place at 6-3. Once the tiebreakers were applied (they needed to go to the
third tiebreaker), Coast Guard was declared the winners, with the Privateers in second and Fordham third.
Maritime's three duos at the event were
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY),
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY), and
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY). A Privateer boat crossed the line first in seven of the nine races, including five 1-2 finishes.
"Luke and Amelia were outstanding and led the team," Head Coach
Tara Foster said. "They made great calls on the course and had an overall strong performance with consistent starts, quick reads on the plays, and impressive speed around the marks."
All three of Maritime's squads will be in action next weekend. The dinghy and offshore teams both head to New London, CT, for the Vietor Trophy (dinghy) and J70 Invitational (offshore). The women's sailors, meanwhile, will take part in their Spring championship event—the MAISA Spring Women's Regatta, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
