Maritime Finishes Second In Spring Opener

Results: Fordham Open Team Race | St. Mary's (MD) Women's Fleet Race

BRONX, NY –
After having its first weekend of competition wiped out due to the impact of the winter weather, the Maritime College sailing team finally began its Spring season on March 14-15 with a pair of events.  The Privateers took part in the Fordham Open Team Race, while the women's squad traveled to Maryland for the St. Mary's (MD) Women's Fleet Race.

The Fordham regatta was added to the calendar as a replacement for the cancelled team race at Washington College.  Weather again proved to be a factor, as high winds prevented any races from being completed on Saturday.  With better racing conditions on Sunday, the six teams in attendance were able to contest a double round-robin.  The top four teams then raced a third series to determine the final standings.

Maritime went 10-3 on the weekend to finish second overall.  After losing both of their races to the University of Michigan during the double round-robin, the Privateers earned a 10-11 victory over the Wolverines in the final round.  Maritime's other loss came against Fordham.  Racing for the Privateers were Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY) in the "A" boat, Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) in the "B" boat, and Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) in the "C" boat.  Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) replaced Hartwell for the final three races.

At the St. Mary's (MD) Women's Fleet Race, Maritime sailed against most of the top women's teams from around the country.  The Privateers gained valuable experience heading into their conference championship regatta at the end of the month.  Overall, Maritime was 17th with 382 points.

In the "B" division, Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) and Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) opened the event with a seventh-place finish.  They followed that up by placing 10th in Race 2.  Troast and Sarich also ended up 10th in each of the final two races in the 14-race series.  The Privateers' "A" crew of Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY), meanwhile, took third in Race 8, beating overall winner Boston College to the line.  The duo then secured 17th place in the final standings with a 13th-place showing in Race 14.  On Saturday, Ostapowicz sailed alongside Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD).

Up next, Maritime hosts the annual Admiral Moore Team Race on March 21-22.  The event is named after Adm. H.C. Moore, the President of Maritime College from 1959-67.
