PRINCETON, NJ – The Maritime College sailing team took part in a pair of regattas on Sept. 20 and finished second overall at each. The Privateer women competed in the Tiger Women's Open at Princeton University, while the coed squad participated in the Stony Brook Fall Open.
At Princeton, Maritime was second behind Columbia in both the "A" and "B" fleets, as well as overall. The Privateers finished with a total of 43 points across the eight races. The "A" crew of
Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) earned victories in Races 5 & 7 with a second-place showing in Race 6 sandwiched in between. Maritime's "B" boat of
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) and
Jenna Schulkowski (New Fairfield, CT), meanwhile, placed second in each of the final seven races after opening the regatta with a fifth-place result.
Two weeks after winning the Northeast Series 1 qualifier at Stony Brook, the Privateer coed team returned to Stony Brook for the final event of the three-week qualifying series. Having already advanced to the Luce Regatta based on its results over the previous two regattas, Maritime ranked second overall this weekend with 51 total points. The Privateers were just edged by Fordham for the top spot in the "A" division and also placed second behind the Rams in the "B" boat.
Maritime's "A" crew of
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) opened the regatta with a victory, then had three consecutive second-place finishes before earning another win in Race 5. They concluded the event with their third victory of the eight-race series. The Privateers' "B" boat also notched three wins—in Races 1, 3 & 7—to go along with second-place efforts in Races 2 & 8.
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) sailed in the first three and last two races, with
Andrew Embry (Midway, KY) and
Kristofer Litwinko (Somerville, NJ) taking over in the boat for Races 4-6.
This weekend is the annual Maritime Fall Open. Teams from across the country (as well as McGill, the four-time Canadian National Champions) will descend on Fort Schuyler for the two-day regatta on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28.
