NEW LONDON, CT – The Maritime College offshore sailing team raced for the first time this Spring on April 5-6, taking part in the J70 Invitational at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Privateers were in contention for the podium throughout the regatta before ultimately finishing sixth overall on a tiebreaker.
Despite making life on the shore miserable, the rainy, windy conditions made for perfect sailing weather on Saturday, and nine races were completed. The weather was less cooperative on Saturday, as only three races were able to be conducted. Maritime collected 62 points across the 12-race series to finish tied with the College of Charleston. However, the Cougars were awarded fifth place because of their victory in Race 6.
After getting off to a slow start, the Privateers finished third in Race 5 and fourth in Race 6. Maritime then nearly won Race 7, holding the lead until the final moments, when Coast Guard caught a wind gust and was able to cross the line first. The Privateers followed up that showing with a fifth place and a third place to sit in fourth overall after Saturday's racing.
Maritime began Sunday with a second-place finish to move within five points of the top three. However, the Privateers ended up ninth in each of the final two races, knocking them down to sixth in the final standings.
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) served as Maritime's skipper throughout the competition.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) was also a part of the four-member crew for all 12 races.
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) joined them in the J70 for the nine races on Saturday, while
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) and
Ethan Narofsky (East Chatham, NY) each sailed in six races.
This weekend, the Privateers' dinghy squad returns to action at a pair of events. Maritime travels to Washington College in Chestertown, MD, for The Grant, which is the qualifying competition for both the America Trophy the following weekend and several Fall events. The Privateers will also participate in the Owen Trophy at St. Mary's MD.
