ITHACA, NY – The Maritime College sailing team had its first opportunity to qualify for the National Championships at the America Trophy, the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Fleet Race Championship, on April 19-20. Needing to finish in the top two at the regatta, which was hosted by Cornell University, to automatically earn a place at Nationals, the Privateers ended up 16
th overall with 349 points.
Only one race was completed on Saturday due to a lack of wind. The weather was much better on Sunday, however, as the teams were able to contest 11 races on Sunday. Georgetown and Navy earned the two automatic spots at Nationals by ranking first and second overall in the 12-race series.
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) skipped Maritime's "A" crew throughout the event.
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) joined him in the 420 on Saturday, while
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) sailed with Hartwell on Sunday. In the "B" boat,
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) was the skipper for 11 of the 12 races, with
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) at the helm for Race 5.
Ash Clements (Garland, TX) participated in nine races, and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) contested the other three.
Maritime's best result was a seventh-place finish by the "B" crew in Race 9. The "B" team also had a 10
th-place showing in Race 12. Overall, the Privateers tallied 178 points in the "A" division and 171 points in the "B" boat.
Up next for Maritime is the Admiral's Cup, which will be hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on April 26-27. It will be the Privateers' final event of the Spring season, pending a selection to any postseason competition.
