Results: Vietor Trophy | MAISA Spring Women's Regatta
ANNAPOLIS, MD – After beginning the Spring season with mostly team racing, the Maritime College dinghy sailing squad returned to fleet racing on March 29-30, competing in two different regattas. The coed team traveled to Connecticut College for the Vietor Trophy, while the Privateer women participated in their Spring championship event, the MAISA Spring Women's Regatta, at the U.S. Naval Academy.
At the Vietor Trophy, Maritime finished 11
th out of 13 schools with a total score of 237 points. The Privateers' "A" crew of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY) placed third in the first of 13 races, then added fifth-place showings in Races 5 & 11. Overall, they tallied 101 points in their FJ, which was good for ninth in the "A" division.
The "B" crew, meanwhile, collected 136 points. Maritime's best finish was eighth place in Race 12 with
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) in the boat.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) also saw action for the Privateers in the "B" division.
Maritime's women posted a total score of 324 points to end up 13
th out of 15 teams at the MAISA Spring Women's Regatta.
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS) skippered the "A" boat, where she was joined by
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) for the first four races and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) for the remainder of the 15-race series. The Privateers' best result was Gautier and Sarich's eighth-place showing in Race 6.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) competed for Maritime in the "B" division and had a pair of top-five placements. They grabbed second place in Race 10 and were fourth in Race 13. Overall, they raced their FJ to eighth or higher in six of the 15 races. Ostapowicz and Leggett ranked 10
th among "B" crews with 134 points.
While the dinghy team will have next weekend off, the offshore squad will have its first competition of the Spring. The Privateers will take part in the J70 Invitational, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
