THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College dinghy sailing team had its only home regatta of the Spring season on March 22-23. The Privateers welcomed seven other schools to Fort Schuyler for the annual Admiral Moore Team Race. After a double round robin competition, Maritime ended up fifth overall with a 6-8 record.
With beautiful weather and perfect racing conditions on Saturday, each team was able to complete 10 races on the first day of the event. The Privateers opened the regatta by sweeping the first three places in their matchup with Columbia, but dropped their next race against St. Mary's (MD). After rebounding to defeat Clemson, Maritime suffered three consecutive losses to Hobart and William Smith, Coast Guard and Navy. In their final race of the first round, the Privateers earned a victory over Merchant Marine to improve to 3-4 at the midway point of the competition.
Maritime began the second phase of the round robin by avenging its earlier loss to Hobart and William Smith. The Privateers finished second, third and fifth in the race to pull out the one-point win. Maritime then swept the first three places against Columbia for the second time before concluding Day 1 with a loss to St. Mary's (MD).
Entering Sunday with a 5-5 mark, the Privateers began Day 2 with back-to-back losses against Coast Guard and Navy. After beating Merchant Marine, Maritime needed a win over Clemson in its final race to have a shot at a top four finish. However, the Privateers lost to the Tigers and Hobart and William Smith topped Columbia in the final round, placing Maritime fifth overall. Navy went 13-1 to win the competition.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) sailed in the "A" boat for all 14 races.
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS) also contested all 14 races in the "B" boat. She teamed with both
