Privateers Take Sixth at CNU Women’s Fleet Race

Results

NEWPORT NEWS, VA –
One week after the Maritime College open dinghy sailing team began the Spring season with a strong second-place finish, the Privateer women got their Spring campaign underway on March 8-9.  Competing in the Christopher Newport Women's Fleet Race, Maritime ended up sixth overall with 127 points.

The Privateers finished even with NC State, but held the head-to-head tiebreaker.  Maritime got remarkable consistency from both of its boats.  The "A" crew of Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS) and Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) tallied 64 points in their FJ, while the duo of Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) scored 63 points in the "B" division.

Gautier and Wilson placed no lower than eighth in any of the 11 races.  Their best result was a third-place showing in Race 9.  Ostapowicz and Leggett, meanwhile, won their ninth race.  They also grabbed second place in Race 6 and capped the regatta by crossing the line third in Race 11.

The women's team won't compete again until the final weekend of March.  After taking this weekend off, the open dinghy squad will be back in action on March 15-16 at the Washington College Open Team Race.
