BRUNSWICK, ME – The Maritime College sailing team fielded two full squads at the Hewitt Trophy, hosted by Bowdoin College, on Oct. 4-5. In a spirited competition between teammates, the Privateers' two crews were separated by just seven points in the overall standings, placing ninth and 11
th in the 16-boat field.
"Maritime 2" (team designations were made prior to the event for entry/scoring purposes) ended up winning the intersquad battle with 229 total points over the 12 races.
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) sailed in the "A" boat and tallied 109 points. They took second in Race 9 and third in Race 5. The "B" crew of
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) had a best result of fifth place in Race 6. They contributed 125 points to the team total.
For "Maritime 1", the "B" division pairing of
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) ended up fourth or better in four races, including three straight on Sunday They were fourth in Race 9, third in Race 10 and second in Race 11. Overall, Starck and Tebbens finished with 100 points. The "A" team of
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY), meanwhile, placed fifth in Race 2 and fourth in Race 3 before struggling on the second day of the regatta and finishing with 136 total points.
Next weekend, both the dinghy and offshore squads will be in action. The dinghy sailors head to Hobart/William Smith for the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, while the offshore crew competes for the first time in a month at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, hosted by the Larchmont Yacht Club.
