Results: Luce Trophy | McMillan Cup
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Maritime College dingy and offshore sailing teams were both in action on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-19. The dinghy squad traveled to Christopher Newport University for the Luce Trophy, while the offshore crew headed to the U.S. Naval Academy for the McMillan Cup, a qualifying event for the National Championships.
At the Luce Trophy, the Privateers needed to finish in the top six to secure a place at the War Memorial next weekend. Unfortunately, Maritime ended up seventh overall with 239 total points and did not qualify. The Privateers' "A" boat got off to a shaky start on Saturday before recovering in Sunday's 11 races. Maritime was fifth or better in five of the final eight races, including a third-place showing in Race 10.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) both saw time as the skipper, each partnering with either
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) or
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY).
In the "B" division,
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) sailed together throughout the regatta. They Privateers' tandem ended up fifth in the class with 109 points. Barker and McCarthy had six top-five results, highlighted by a third-place finish in Race 6.
Maritime's crew of
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS),
Louis Kirk (New Rochelle, NY),
Max Baldeon (Bronx, NY),
Sebastien Lemaire (Moorestown, NJ),
Ethan Narofsky (East Chatham, NY),
Robert Wieczorek III (Greenport, NY),
Christopher Zender (Sayville, NY) and
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY) began the McMillan Cup with a second-place showing. However, the Privateers were disqualified in the third race, dropping them to seventh in the team standings. Maritime remained in seventh place for the remainder of the regatta, finishing with 46 points.
This marked the end of the Fall season for the dinghy team, which will begin its Spring schedule in early March. The offshore squad, meanwhile, may potentially receive an at-large bid to the National Championship event, the Kennedy Cup. Should the Privateers be selected, they'll return to Navy for the regatta on the weekend of Nov. 1-2.
