Results: Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta | David Lee Arnoff Trophy
LARCHMONT, NY – It was a silver weekend for the Maritime College sailing team on Oct. 11-12, as the Privateers finished second at a pair of regattas. Maritime took second at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, hosted by the Larchmont Yacht Club, while the dinghy's squad had its best-ever result at the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, which was hosted by Hobart & William Smith Colleges on Seneca Lake.
Racing at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta was limited to Saturday because of the pending nor'easter on Sunday. Overall, the teams sailed six races in J-109 boats and the Privateers finished with 18 points aboard
Leading Edge. Maritime won the second race and capped the series with a second-place finish in Race 6. The second-place effort was the Privateers' best showing in J-109s since 2007.
Robert Wieczorek III (Greenport, NY) served as the skipper and was joined on the crew by
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY),
Sebastien Lemaire (Moorestown, NJ),
Edmund Morris (Bayside, NY),
Max Baldeon (Bronx, NY),
Louis Kirk (New Rochelle, NY) and
Ethan Narofsky (East Chatham, NY).
At the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, the teams completed 10 races on Saturday, but were only able to get one race in on Sunday due to a lack of wind. Maritime collected 134 points in its 420 to grab second place overall out of seven participating schools. The Privateers were second in the "A" division with 65 points and the "B" boat ranked third with 69 points. In the combined standings, the two Maritime teams finished fourth and fifth.
The Privateers' "A" crew of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY) had a pair of third-place results in Race 2 & Race 4. They then took second in the only race on Sunday.
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ), meanwhile, also had two third-place efforts (Races 6 & 9) and beat their teammates in six of the 11 races.
Both the dinghy and offshore teams will be in action again this weekend. The dinghy squad heads to Christopher Newport for the Luce Regatta, while the offshore crew will head to Navy for the McMillan Cup, which serves as the qualifying event for the Kennedy Cup (the offshore National Championships).
