Results: Tiger Women's Open | Jesuit Invitational
PRINCETON, NJ – The Maritime College sailing team sent a young squad to both the Tiger Women's Open at Princeton University and Jesuit Invitational, which was hosted by Fordham, this weekend.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Ash Clements (Garland, TX) won the final two races at Princeton, leading the Privateers to third place in the team standings. At the Jesuit Invitational, meanwhile, Maritime placed sixth.
Racing in the "A" boat, Ostapowicz and Clements put together a solid five-race series, capped by the two victories. Overall, they took third in the division with 20 points. The Privateers' "B" boat of
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) and
Ian Guzman (Paterson, NJ), meanwhile, finished with 18 points. They placed second, second, third in the last three races of the day.
Maritime ended up third of the seven teams entered with a total score of 38 points. Princeton just edged American, 25-26, for the top spot in the team standings.
At the Jesuit Invitational, all but three of the 10 sailors entered by Maritime were newcomers. The Privateers used a total of 10 different competitors in three boats, with veteran skippers
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY) and
John Donnelly (New City, NY) skipping the "A" and "B" vessels, respectively. Mendes was joined by
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) for the first 12 races and
Kristofer Litwinko (Somerville, NJ) in Races 13 and 14. Donnelly teamed with
Benjamin Landerer (Great Neck, NY) on Saturday before
Benjamin Bettinger (Macedon, NY) raced on Sunday.
In the "C" division, Maritime utilized several combinations, none for more than four races.
Jackson Bachner (Glen Head, NY) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) sailed together in the first four races before McCarthy was paired with
Andrew Embry (Midway, KY) for Races 5 and 6. Embry also teamed with Litwinko for three races, while
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS) skipped Races 10-14 with both Embry and McCarthy.
Overall, the Privateers finished with 605 total points. Maritime's best showing was fifth place by the "A" squad in Race 5. In Race 12, meanwhile, the Privateers placed two boats in the top 10, with the "A" team finishing sixth and the "C" team taking ninth.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Privateers will host the annual Maritime Fall Open. It will be Maritime's only home regatta of the fall season.
