Results: Shields Trophy | Jack Boehringer Memorial Regatta
ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Maritime College offshore sailing team kicked off its 2024-25 season on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15, by participating in the annual Shields Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The Privateers' dinghy squad, meanwhile, traveled to Cornell University for the Jack Boehringer Memorial Regatta.
At the Shields Trophy, Maritime's Navy 44 boat was skipped by
Marz Henehan (San Diego, CA). The eight-member crew was rounded out by
James Jensen (Lynbrook, NY),
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH),
Kevin Kokiadis (Levittown, NY),
Christopher Zender (Sayville, NY),
Ethan Narofsky (East Chatham, NY),
Arseny Tarasov (Moscow, Russia),
Robert Wieczorek III (Greenport, NY) and
Maximillian Gurnett (Bayside, NY). Wieczorek sailed in the first four races before being replaced by Gurnett for the final three.
Maritime's best finish in the seven-race series was fourth place in Race 6. Overall, the Privateers tallied 52 points to put them in a tie with NC State. However, NC State won on the head-to-head tiebreaker, ranking the Wolfpack seventh and Maritime eighth in the final standings.
Meanwhile, at the Jack Boehringer Memorial Regatta, the Privateers entered three boats.
Ben Hosford (Fairport, NY) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) were Maritime's "A" team, while the Privateers' second 420 was skipped by
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) alongside
Ryan Sylvester (St. George's, Grenada). In the "C" division, skipper
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) was joined by
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY).
After a full day of racing on Saturday, there wasn't enough wind on Sunday and the final standings were based on the results of the eight completed races. Maritime had a team total of 332 points, which placed the Privateers fifth overall.
Hartwell and Mendes were the best-scoring pair, notching three top 10 placements, including ninth place in the final race to earn 100 points. Hosford and Cunha finished with 103 total points and had an eighth-place finish in Race 4. In the "B" division, meanwhile, Lunati and Sylvester tallied 129 points with a best showing of 11
th place in Race 3.
While the offshore team is off next weekend, the dinghy sailors will participate in two events. Maritime will compete in the Tiger Women's Open at Princeton, as well as the Jesuit Invitational, hosted by Fordham, on Sept. 21-22.
