Results: Laser North | KP Open Invitational | KP Women's Regatta
KINGS POINT, NY – The Maritime College sailing team began the fall portion of its 2024-25 season this weekend with a trio of events at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY) competed in the Laser North qualifier, while the Privateers also entered boats in the KP Open Invitational and KP Women's Regatta on Sept. 7-8.
Mendes finished 15
th overall in the single-handed dinghy competition and did not advance to the Van Duyne Cup, which is the championship event in laser. His best result in the 14-race series was an 11
th-place showing in Race 11.
In the KP Open Invitational, Maritime featured a young team that took sixth overall with 300 points.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) skipped the "A" boat alongside
Ryan Sylvester (St. George's, Grenada) for 11 races and
Harry Beimler (St. Simons Island, GA) in the other three. Beimler also spent some time in the "B" boat, which consisted entirely of newcomers.
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) alternated as the skip, while
Nick Pistolakis (Point Pleasant, NJ) was also a member of the crew.
Both the "A" and "B" squads had their best showing in Race 10. In that race, Maritime placed fourth in the "A" division and fifth in the "B" heat. Overall, the Privateers' "A" team tallied 146 points, while the "B" boat collected 154 points.
Maritime tallied 443 points in the KP Women's Regatta, which placed the Privateers ninth overall. Skipper
Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) was joined in the "A" boat by
Ash Clements (Garland, TX) and
Ian Guzman (Paterson, NJ), while the "B" boat was skipped by
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY).
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) sailed alongside Ostapowicz in 10 of the 14 races, with Guzman joining Ostapowicz in the other four.
Up next for the dinghy squad is a trip to Cornell for the annual Jack Boehringer Memorial Regatta on Sept. 14-15. The offshore team, meanwhile, kicks off its campaign this weekend by traveling to the U.S. Naval Academy for the Shields Trophy.
