Results: Vietor Trophy | MAISA Spring Women's Championship
NEW LONDON, CT – Led by
Spencer Barnes (Rocky River, OH) and
Marcus Adam's (Severna Park, MD) first-place finish in the "A" division, the Maritime College sailing team placed sixth overall at the Vietor Trophy, which was hosted by Connecticut College, on March 30-31. The duo won three of the 13 races, took second in two others, and were third three times with their 420.
Barnes and Adam trailed Northeastern's boat by one point heading into the final race. However, their victory, coupled with the Huskies' third-place finish, was enough to flip that one-point advantage in Maritime's favor. Barnes and Adam had a total score of 49 points, while Northeastern's "A" crew concluded the 13-race series with 50 points.
In the "B" division,
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY) sailed with both
Ben Hosford (Fairport, NY) and
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY). Each pairing had a third-place showing, with Lunati and Mendes closing out the first day with a third-place finish in Race 10. Hosford and Mendes then took third in the final race of the regatta. Maritime posted a score of 116 points in the "B" division, giving the Privateers an overall total of 165 points, ranking them sixth out of 13 teams.
The Privateers also sent a crew to Hobart & William Smith Colleges for the MAISA Spring Women's Fleet Race Championship. Maritime ended up 14
th overall with a team score of 251 points.
Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) and
Kaitlyn Scarcella (Staten Island, NY) tallied 128 points in the "A" division. Their best finish was in Race 3 of the 10-race series, when their 420 crossed the line in 10
th place. In the "B" division,
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS) and
Ian Guzman (Paterson, NJ) posted a score of 123 points. They had three top-10 showings, highlighted by seventh place in Race 5.
Next weekend, the dinghy team again splits up for a pair of competitions, as the Privateers will head to the Prosser Trophy, hosted by Old Dominion University, as well as the Ocean County Spring Open. Maritime's offshore sailors, meanwhile, return to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for another J70 Invitational.
