THROGGS NECK, NY – For the fourth time this season, freshman forward
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) of the Maritime College men's basketball team has been honored as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week. He posted back-to-back 20-point efforts in the Privateers' home games against CCNY and Farmingdale.
Devaney finished with 20 points on 10-for-16 shooting in the 90-83 loss to CCNY last Tuesday. He also secured five rebounds and distributed two assists while recording a block. Devaney followed up that effort by posting a career-high 24 points in the Skyline opener against Farmingdale on Saturday, as Maritime knocked off the defending conference champions, 71-57. He went 11-for-16 from the field and grabbed five boards to go along with four assists and three blocks in the victory.
In the two games, Devaney shot 65.6 percent (21-of-32) from the floor and averaged 22.0 points. He's scored 20 or more points in three straight contests and four times in the Privateers' first seven outings. Devaney currently ranks fifth in the Skyline with 18.6 points per game overall.
The only time this season in which Devaney didn't receive Rookie of the Week honors was on Dec. 3, after Maritime's exhibition contest at Army (which was the Privateers' only game that week). He received each of the first three awards (Nov. 13-26).
This weekend, Maritime travels to St. Mary's (MD) for the Seahawk Holiday Classic. The Privateers (5-2) take on Notre Dame (MD) (2-5) at 5 p.m. on Saturday before facing the host Seahawks (5-3) at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
