ANNAPOLIS, MD – On Oct. 5-6, the Maritime College sailing team participated in the first round of the Open ACC Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy. Fielding a young squad consisting entirely of freshmen and sophomores, the Privateers ended up 18
th overall and did not advance to the final round. Maritime did, however, qualify for the Open ACC Tournament on the weekend of Oct. 19-20.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) was the primary skipper in the "A" boat, sailing in 16 of the 18 races. He was joined by
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) in the first seven races and
Ryan Sylvester (St. George's, Grenada) for the remainder of the competition. In the remaining two races,
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) skipped the Privateers' 420 alongside Cunha.
In the "B" division,
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) was at the helm for Maritime.
Nick Pistolakis (Point Pleasant, NJ) and Wilson split time in the boat. Pistolakis sailed the first six and final four races, with Wilson taking the eight races in the middle.
Maritime's best finish across the 18-race series was a 12
th-place showing by the "B" boat in Race 3. The "A" boat's top result was 13
th place in Race 6. Overall, the Privateers recorded a team score of 608 points.
Next weekend, both the dinghy and offshore teams are in action. The dinghy sailors will head to Kings Point for the Nevins Trophy, while the offshore squad will take part in the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta at the Larchmont Yacht Club in Larchmont, NY.
