Results: McMillan Cup | Open ACC Tournament
ANNAPOLIS, MD – On Oct. 19-20, the Maritime College offshore sailing team participated in the oldest and one of the most prestigious regattas in all of collegiate sailing—the McMillan Cup. The Privateers finished eighth overall in the event, which was hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. Maritime's dinghy sailors, meanwhile, took part in the Open ACC Tournament at Connecticut College.
Established in 1930, the McMillan Cup has been raced every year since then except for 2020, when it was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Held annually on the Chesapeake Bay since 1950, racers compete using Navy's fleet of 44-foot boats.
Maritime's crew consisted of skipper
Marz Henenhan (San Diego, CA), as well as
Kevin Kokiadis (Levittown, NY),
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS),
Christopher Zender (Sayville, NY),
James Jensen (Lynbrook, NY),
Ethan Narofsky (East Chatham, NY),
Robert Wieczorek III (Greenport, NY) and
Arseny Tarasov (Moscow, Russia). The Privateers took fourth in the second of five races and ended up with a total score of 36 points. Navy won the McMillan Cup with 13 points.
The dinghy team placed 16
th overall at the Open ACC Tournament, collecting 350 total points across 13 races. Maritime was 14
th in the "A" division with 152 points, while the "B" boat ranked 17
th with 198 points.
In the "A" division,
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) teamed up in 11 of the 13 races. Their best results were a pair of sixth-place showings in Races 6 & 13.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Ryan Sylvester (St. George's, Grenada), meanwhile, contested Races 7 & 8.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) split time with
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) in the "B" boat. Ostapowicz skipped eight races, with Barker handling the other five. Ostapowicz and Wilson sailed their 420 to ninth place in Race 7.
Next weekend, the dinghy squad has a pair of championship events. Maritime will participate in the MAISA Women's Fall Open, which is being hosted by Old Dominion University, as well as the War Memorial at St. Mary's University Maryland. The offshore team has the weekend off before returning to Navy for the Kennedy Cup on Nov. 2-3.
