THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College sailing team hosted its annual Fall Open on Sept. 28-29. Despite persistent rain and wind that necessitated several adjustments to the course, all 14 races in the regatta were completed. The Privateers ended up taking fifth out of 13 teams in the final standings, tallying 183 points.
In the "A" division, Maritime's pair of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) finished third with 73 points. They finished either second or third in six races and fifth in two others. Hartwell and Wilson raced their FJ to second place in Race 4 on Saturday and Race 11 on Sunday.
Four different Privateers raced in the "B" boat.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Ash Clements (Garland, TX) teamed up for the first four races before
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) took over. Ostapowicz and McCarthy sailed together for the final two races on Saturday. Barker and Clements, meanwhile, was the pair on Sunday.
Maritime's best result in the "B" division was three fourth-place showings. Ostapowicz and Clements placed fourth in each of the first two races, while Barker and Clements finished fourth in Race 11. Overall, the Privateers' "B" team ended up with a score of 110 points.
Webb Institute had a dominant weekend, winning 10 of the 14 "A" races and three "B" races to easily claim the team title with 71 points. Texas was second with 120 points followed by Hobart & William Smith (136) and Michigan (176).
Up next for the Privateers is the first round of the Open ACC Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy on Oct. 5-6. This event will determine Maritime's destination for the weekend of Oct. 19-20. Should the Privateers place high enough, they will qualify for the final round of the Open ACC Championships. Otherwise, Maritime will participate in the Open ACC Tournament.
