KINGS POINT, NY – The Maritime College sailing team concluded its 2022-23 season at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championships, which were held at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on May 30-31. Needing to finish in the top nine in the Open Dinghy Western Semifinal to reach the championship round, the Privateers came up just short. Maritime ended up in 11
th place, eight points shy of qualifying.
After 13 races, the Privateers had a team score of 220 points. That total placed Maritime behind Fordham (211), Boston College (212) and the College of Charleston (213) in the battle for the final two qualifying positions, which went to Fordham and Boston College. The 11
th-place showing was Maritime's best team result since 2015, when the Privateers made the championship round with an eighth-place semifinal finish.
Racing in the "A" division were
Benton Amthor (Yorktown, VA) and
Mark Modzelewski (Hollywood, FL). They collected 120 points after notching four top-five finishes in their 420. Amthor and Modzelewski won the 11
th race to go along with a second-place result in Race 3. They also placed third in Race 5. The duo took 10
th in the division.
In the "B" division, Maritime was skipped by
Spencer Barnes (Rocky River, OH). He started the regatta paired with
Rebecca Runyan (Mastic, NY), with
Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) taking over for Runyan in Race 3. Barnes and Leggett would go on to win that race. They finished among the top 10 in 10 of the final 11 races (the boat had 11 top-10 showings overall). Barnes and Leggett capped their series by placing fourth, fifth, eighth, sixth and sixth in the final five races. The Privateers collected 100 total points, which was good enough to place the boat seventh in the division. Maritime was just two points behind fifth-place Dartmouth.
This was Maritime's second consecutive appearance at the ICSA National Championships in open dinghy. Last season, the Privateers qualified for the first time since 2015 and finished 18
th in their semifinal.
