The Maritime College men's basketball team took their talents to the Division I level on Wednesday night as they traveled to Army West Point. The game will be marked as an exhibition contest for the Privateers, but will go down as a real game for the Black Knights.
The young roster for Maritime didn't come up with the miraculous upset as they fell 91-40, but they gained an invaluable experience against a Division I program.
"It was an incredible experience for our guys to go up to Army and play against some of the best talent in the country," said head coach
Mike Berkun. "I'm excited to see what they learned from this and apply it to some important upcoming conference games."
Thirteen players saw action for the Privateers and
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the way with 11 points on 4-10 shooting.
Ronan Doherty (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate) added eight points shooting 2-3 from behind the arc and 2-2 from the free throw line.
Nicholas Ovanessian (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep),
Damon Brown (Bronx, NY/All Hallows),
Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point),
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem),
Alec Downes (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist),
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's), and
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) also scored for Maritime.
Maritime gets back on the court after the Thanksgiving break as they take on John Jay at home on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. Their next home game will mark the Privateers "Lace it Up" game where they will be accepting donations to help the fight against Pediatric Cancer.
