Maritime Dinghy Sailing Hosts Admiral Moore Team Race; Finishes Ninth

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime dinghy sailing team hosted the Admiral Moore Team Race on the East River this past weekend while hosting a field on 10 teams. After the conclusion of the two-day affair, the Privateers finished the weekend in ninth position as they raced on 420 and FJ sailboats.

While the weather was ideal for most of the day on Saturday, it was not as admirable for sailing as light wind limited racing action throughout the day. While the temperatures were cooler on Sunday, the breeze did pick back up and allow for the conclusion of the team race. The U.S. Naval Academy led the field, finishing just ahead of Stanford and Georgetown, who rounded out the top three.

The Privateers completed one circuit and squared off with every team in the opening round of racing. The team picked up one win over Vermont with a 1-3-4 finish over the Catamounts, and concluded the round with a 1-8 mark to compete in the bottom four bracket.

During the bottom four, Maritime picked up another win over Vermont, while dropping their head-to-head bouts with both Dartmouth and Bowdoin to close out the weekend with a 2-10 overall record.

The Privateers were able to use hosting duties to their advantage, with their full roster available for the regatta. Senior A.J. Libby (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), juniors Andreas Adam (Annapolis, Md./Severna Park), Zach  Hill, and sophomores John Lawless (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and Kyle Comerford (Annapolis, Md/Annapolis) skippered the majority of the weekend for the Privateers, while freshman Aidan Molesky (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) also got some experience skippering in the bottom four round.

Junior Timmy  Montera, sophomore Skye Miller (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) and freshman Macy Blakeley (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall), along with Adam served as crew throughout the weekend for Maritime and rotated through the six skippers.

Maritime will be in action again this coming weekend, when the team travels to St. Mary's City, Maryland for the Team Race Challenge hosted by St. Mary's (Md.). Racing action will open on Saturday, April 1, before finishing up on April 2.
