Women's Swimming Cruises to Season-Opening Win over Kean, 109-84

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Maritime women's swimming team opened the 2017-18 season on Wednesday evening inside the Riesenberg Aquatic Center. The Privateers won the dual meet by the score of 109-84 over the Kean Cougars.

The Privateers coasted to the win with victories in eight of the 11 events at the meet.

Maritime was led by junior Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence), who won her two individual events in the 1,000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Classmate Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) also had the fastest times in both of her individual events in the 200 individual medley and the 100 yard breaststroke.

Freshmen Parrish Stinson (Washington, D.C./School without Walls), Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), and Margaret Stinson (Washington, D.C./School without Walls) also recorded their first career individual wins of the season.

Maritime won the opening event in the 200 yard medley relay as M. Stinson, Zink, Brow and Aaron registered a time of 2:12.47. Aaron followed with a win on the 1,000 freestyle, while fellow junior Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) was second to touch and record four points for her second place finish.

P. Stinson followed with her win in the 200 yard freestyle followed by freshman Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), who took second place. Sophomore Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) took second in the 50 yard freestyle to lead the Privateers with a 29.40. Sophomore Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent) and junior Megan Alicea (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) took third and fourth, respectively.

Sink followed with a win in the 200 individual medley, while Davis followed with a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly, followed by sophomore Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep). Brow registered the win in the 100 freestyle, with Thompson followed three seconds behind in second place.

M. Stinson recorded the convincing win in the 100 backstroke at 1:13.44, while Champlin took third at 1:28.34. Aaron had a 51-second win in the 500 freestyle, followed by P. Stinson and Curran as the Privateers swept the event.

Zink followed with a win in the 100 breaststroke, with Neely just 14 seconds off of the pace in third position.

Maritime was edged out in the 200 freestyle relay as Alicea, Brow, Champlin and M. Stinson were just 0.8 seconds off the pace.

Maritime (1-0) will be back in action on Tuesday evening, when the team plays host to the William Paterson Pioneers at 6 p.m. from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center.

Kean (0-1) will be on the road this Saturday, when the team travels to Ramapo for a 2 p.m. start in Mahwah, N.J.
