Dinghy Sailing Takes Part in Trio of Events this past Weekend

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – This past weekend, the Maritime Dinghy Sailing team competed in three events, which also included hosting their first event of the 2016-17 season.
 
The Privateers placed seventh of 17 teams at the Maritime Fall Open, while also taking 10th place of 13 teams at the Sacred Heart Trophy in Connecticut. At the Nevins Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Privateers came in 17th place of 20 teams competing at the event.
 
At home, Maritime scored 117 points in Division A, and had a very strong showing in Division B with just 78 points on the weekend. As a team, the Privateers combined for 195 points and were just six points behind Stony Brook, which finished in sixth position.
 
Racing for the Privateers in Division A was senior A.J. Libby (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), with freshman Erin Teige (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Dominican Academy) serving as Crew. The pair had two third place finishes through their 13 races on the weekend, while finishing in the top half of the field in four races total on the weekend.
 
In Division B, the Privateers sent junior Andreas Adam (Annapolis, Md./Severna Park) on the water as a skipper with freshman Macy Blakeley (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) serving as crew. In their first event of the season together, the pair impressed as they finished within the top-seven in 10 of their 13 events for the two-day event.
 
Georgetown ended up atop the standings at the end of the weekend, followed by Hampton, Navy, Queen's (Ontario), Cornell, and Stony Brook.
 
In Connecticut, Maritime sent a very young set of sailors to the Sacred Heart Trophy. The quartet of newcomers to the team all fared well with 183 points, just two points behind the host Pioneers at the end of the weekend.
 
In Division A, the Privateers had success throughout the weekend, as the pairing of freshman Aidan Molesky (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and classmate Morgan Forde (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) amassed 62 points in their 10 races, which included six top-five finishes and a weekend-best third place finish in their sixth race of the weekend.
 
Freshman Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep) and sophomore Kimberly Cabrera (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) teamed up in Division B and totaled 121 points with one top-10 finish in their 10 races on the weekend.
 
Coast Guard won the event with a weekend-best 54 points with Tufts, Fordham, McGill, and New Hampshire rounding out the top-five at the competition.
 
Finally in Kings Point, N.Y., the Privateers competed in three divisions, with each division representing FJs, Z420s and Laser boats. On the weekend, Maritime totaled 618 points as the team took 17th place of the 20 teams at the event.
 
In Division A, sophomore Kyle Comerford (Annapolis, Md/Annapolis) teamed up with classmate Skye Miller (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) as the pair tallied 192 points on the weekend. Comerford and Miller started the weekend off strong with a fourth place finish but posted just five more top-10 finishes through 16 rotations on the water.
 
Division B saw sophomore John Lawless (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) serve as skipper throughout the weekend, while sophomore Maura King (Bayport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) served as crew through the first two races before being replaced by freshman Reid McHenry (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles School) for the remainder of the raced. Lawless and King had a fourth place finish in their initial race, followed by an eighth place finish in the second race. Lawless and McHenry have five top-10 finishes together.
 
Lastly, in Division C aboard the laser boats, sophomore Juan Lejerraga finished the weekend with 219 points. His weekend-best scores were a pair of 10th place finishes in his third, and his 16th races of the weekend.
 
At the Nevins Trophy, Yale emerged victorious and brought home the title with 320 points on the weekend between the three divisions. Tufts was in a close second, just seven points off the pace. Georgetown was third, followed by the College of Charleston and Roger Williams rounding out the top five in the final standings.
 
After the busy weekend for the Privateers, Maritime will take part in three more events this upcoming weekend. The North Fall Qualifier will take place in Geneva, New York hosted by Hobart/William Smith, while the St. Mary's Intersectional taking place in St. Mary's City Maryland. Finally the Privateers will also compete in the MAISA Laser Qualifier hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
