THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Dinghy Sailing team was back on the water this weekend with a pair of events to open the 2016-17 season. The Privateers took part in Laser North at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and also the Harry Anderson Trophy at Yale.
At the Laser North Competition, Maritime took 9th and 10th place of 14 boats, while at the Harry Anderson, the Privateers finished in 17th place of 17 teams.
During the laser competition in Kings Point, N.Y., the Privateers sent senior
A.J. Libby (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and sophomore
Juan Lejarraga (New York, N.Y./Montessori) to take part in the singlehanded competition.
Libby got off to a quick start with a win in his first rotation, and recorded a fifth place finish in his fourth race. The remainder of the weekend he settled for seven finishes in either 9th or 10th place as he finished the weekend with 111 points for an overall finish of 10th place.
Lejerraga was consistently towards the front of the pack in the early-going on Saturday with three top-six finishes in his first five rotations. After tailing off in the middle-section of the weekend, he posted an 8th place finish in his final race to end the weekend with 102 points, just one place in the final standings ahead of Libby.
Meanwhile at Yale, the Privateers raced aboard Z420s and ended the two-day competition with a combined 370 points for their 17th place finish. Maritime's Division A pair recorded 197 points, while Division B scored a 173.
Sophomore's
Kyle Comerford (Annapolis, Md/Annapolis) and
Skye Miller (New York, N.Y./Clarkstown North) teamed up in Division A, and had three ninth place finishes in their third, eighth, and fourteenth rotation.
In Division B, the Privateers had sophomores
John Lawless (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and
Maura King (Bayport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) paired up for their 173 points. The duo got off to a quick start with a fourth place finish in their first race, and had two other top-10 finishes on the weekend to round out the weekend.
Maritime will continue their season this upcoming weekend, when the Privateers host the Maritime Fall Open, while also travelling to the Nevins Trophy at Merchant Marine, and the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Connecticut.
