Twelfth Place Finish for Dinghy Sailing Team at War Memorial

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Maritime dinghy sailing team recorded 256 points at the War Memorial as the Privateers finished 12th in a field of 18 teams on the St. Mary's River in Maryland aboard 420 boats.
 
Division B saw sophomore John Lawless (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) skipper the entire weekend with classmate Skye Miller (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) serving as crew for the first 10 races before sophomore Maura King (Bayport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) took over as she served as crew in the 11th race for Division B as well. Overall Lawless skippered his boat to 105 points, which was 10th best in the division.
 
Within Division B, Lawless and Miller got off to an eighth place start on Saturday. The pair later went on the score a seventh place finish in their third race, before posting five-straight top-10 finishes including a weekend-best third place finish in their ninth race together. When King took over in the 11th race, both she and Lawless raced to a 10th place finish to cap off the scoring at 105 for Division B.
 
In Division A, Maritime tallied a score of 151 points, as sophomore skipper Kyle Comerford (Annapolis, Md/Annapolis) and senior skipper A.J. Libby (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) split time with King, who spent the entire weekend as crew through the 11 race series.
 
Comerford started out the weekend as skipper for the first four races and raced with King to an eighth place finish in their second race of the weekend. After a 12th place finish, Libby took over as skipper for the next two races before Comerford took over once again. In their final five races together, Comerford and King picked up a weekend-best seventh place finish for a division total of 151 points.
 
Merchant Marine won the event by just one point over Georgetown with 102 points on the weekend. George Washington finished third, while Hobart/William Smith, Navy, Hampton, St. Mary's (Md.), and Fordham all finished within the top eight to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Championships.
 
Up next, the Maritime dinghy sailing team will be back on the water for the Hap Moore Team Race this coming weekend, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
