ANNAPOLIS, Md. – This past weekend the Maritime offshore sailing team finished third at the McMillan Cup. The event was hosted by the United States Naval Academy aboard Navy 44 boats, and featured a field of 10 teams.
Â
On Saturday, wind conditions saw gusts over 30 knots, forcing the cancellation of competition on the first day of the weekend, and pushing the event entirely to Sunday.
Â
Three races were run on Sunday, as Maritime finished in third place in their initial race before back-to-back fourth place finishes for a total score of 11 points on the weekend.
Â
Maritime finished just two points behind Coast Guard, while Navy won the event with ease as the Midshipmen tallied first place finishes in all three races for a perfect score of three.
Â
Competing for the Privateers this weekend was junior skipper
Riley Kernan (Manasquan, N.J./Wall), who was joined by seniors
David Yonks (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai),
Alex Haim (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston Porter) and
Christian Perez (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley); junior
Jack Ryder (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck); and sophomores
Gregory Ferguson (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches),
Peter Mosconi (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian), and
Jeffery Ellington (Ft. Myers, Florida/Fort Myers).
Â
After the Privateers in third place, Mass. Maritime, Maine Maritime and Merchant Marine finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with 17 points. Army-West Point took seventh place, while Roger Williams, Queen's (Ontario), and the University of Rhode Island rounded out the field.
Â
In addition to the McMillan Cup going, junior
Trace Dittenhofer (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township), and freshmen
Miller Condrack (Siesta Key, Fla./Out of Door Academy),
Bailey Kerr (Charleston, S.C./Hanahan), and
Maxwell Ryder (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) took part in the Small Keelboat Invite, which was a promotional event at the U.S. Naval Academy.
