Final ResultsTHROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On Friday evening, the Maritime Women's Swimming team picked up a victory in its final Skyline Conference meet of the season as the Privateers defeated the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears by the score of 120-59 from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center.
With the victory, Maritime now has four on the season to tie the single-season mark for wins in a campaign with four, tying the mark set by the 2014-15 squad a year ago.
The Privateers were led by freshmen
Ekaterina Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), as the rookies picked up a pair of individual victories on the night. Junior
Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy), sophomore
Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled), and freshman
Catherine Teige (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Lady of Good Counsel) also picked up solo victories during the meet.
The evening began with Maritime collecting a two-second win in the 200 Medley Relay as Zink and Soulagnet paired up with senior
Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and freshman
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) to earn the win with a time of 2:11.50.
O'Brien scored her win next with a time of 14:44.03 in the 1,000 Freestyle as she swam unopposed during the event. Up next was the 200 Freestyle, which saw sophomore
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) post a second place time of 2:35.47, classmate
Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) came to the wall in third position with a 2:57.64.
Teige scored her win in the 50 Freestyle, as she notched a half-second win over her closest competitor with a time of 28:36. Newcomer
Olga Anna Papaeconomou (Darien, Conn./Darien) came in third at 31.14, with sophomore
Kayla Nolan (Howard Beach, N.Y./Scholars' Academy) in fifth with a 33:00.
Zink and Soulagnet posted a top-two finish as the pair ran unopposed in the 200 Individual Medley, Zink picked up the win with a 2:36.54, while Soulagnet scored a 2:49.94.
In the 100 Butterfly, Soulagnet edged out her closest competition by four one-hundredths of a second as she scored a 1:18.34. Davis came in a close third at 1:23.51, which set a new personal record for the freshman.
Aaron then scored her first win of the night in the 100 Freestyle as she won by three seconds, in her first-ever 100-Yard Freestyle race during her collegiate career. Teige finished in third with a 1:06.83, while Nolan touched the wall with a time of 1:20.54.
The 100 Backstroke saw Crandall lead Maritime with a second place finish, followed by O'Brien with a 1:23.19, and Yee with a 1:30.65.
Aaron scored her second win in as many races with a 1:19.51, cruising to a 90-second victory over Granit, who came in second place with a 7:59.80.
Zink posted her second win of the night with a time of 1:19.51, for a nine-second win over the top Bear finisher. Crandall came in third (1:28.84), while Papaeconomou posted a fourth place time of 1:29.98.
The last race of the evening was the 200 Freestyle Relay, which saw yet another photo finish as the Bears edged out the Privateers by just two one-hundredths of a second. Maritime's quartet of O'Brien, Teige, Davis and Aaron scored a 1:59.18 for the second place finish. The quartet of Granit, Nolan, Papaeconomou, and Yee came to the finish in third place overall with a 2:12.20.
Maritime will wrap up the regular season this coming Thursday, as the team travels to Queens College for a tri-meet against the Queens Knights and the York (N.Y.) Cardinals as both the women's and men's teams will be back in action.
St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) wrapped up its regular season this evening, and will look forward to the Skyline Conference Championship meet, which begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 29 from the Riesenberg Aquatic Center on the Maritime College campus.
