Final ResultsBRONX, N.Y. – On Wednesday evening, the Maritime Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving teams took to the road for a non-conference meet against the Lehman Lightning from The APEX on the Lehman College Campus.
The men's swimming team picked up a non-league victory over the Lightning by the score of 134-107, while the women fell to Lehman in a closely contested matchup by a 111-95 score.
The women's swimming team got off to a quick start as the quartet of
Catherine Teige (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Lady of Good Counsel),
Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield),
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), and
Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) picked up a 10-second win in the 200-Medley Relay (2:18.81). That was followed by another victory as
Ekaterina Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) scored a four-minute win in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 12:31.13.
Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) competed in the 200 Freestyle and came in second with a 2:34.10, while
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) came in fifth with a 3:02.49.
Leahy recorded her career-best time in the 50-Freestyle, as she touched the wall with a time of 27.63 to break her personal best that had stood for over two calendar years.
Alexandra Schnabel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) posted a fourth place finish with a 35.06.
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) came to the wall in second position with a time of 2:37.61, as she was followed by
Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township).
Schnabel recorded nine unopposed points in the one-meter dive with a career-best score of 159.30.
As swimming action resumed, Aaron finished second in the 100 Butterfly with a 1:09.09, followed by Davis in fourth with a 1:24.52. In the 100 Freestyle, Zink picked up a 1:01.50, which was good enough for second place, while Granit finished fourth.
The 100 Backstroke saw Crandall collect a 1:21.44 for a third place finish. Teige registered a 1:24.80 for a fourth place finish, while Yee finished sixth with a 1:32.16. Zink collected her lone win of the evening with a first place run in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 6:16.94. Finishing second in the event was O'Brien with a 6:56.67. Crandall ended individual action in third position in the 100 Breaststroke with a 1:26.65.
The Privateer Relay squads finished in the top two spots as O'Brien, Davis, Aaron, and Leahy took first position with a 1:58.27. Granit, Yee, Schnabel and Teige picked up a second place finish with a time of 2:09.22.
Maritime had four men's relay teams in the pool to start the evening in the 200-Medley Relay;
Matt Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta),
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain),
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), and
Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) taking second place with a time of 1:46.80.
Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood),
Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North),
Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), and
John Dean (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) took third place with a time of 1:49.56.
In exhibition,
Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough),
John Accetta (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg),
Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and
Tom Mirrione (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) finished with a time of 2:00.50, while the quartet of
Charles Gallagher (Port Ewen, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes),
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional),
Kyle Zajaczkowski (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), and
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) touched the wall with a time of 2:07.32.
Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) was up next in the 1,000 Freestyle, as he finished in second place with a time of 11:21.05. DeYoung and Hoey also competed and took third and fourth place respectively.
The Privateers picked up their first victory of the night with
Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock) scoring a time of 2:00.25 in the 200 Freestyle. Katz finished third with a 2:02.44, followed by Chilelli in fifth position with a 2:08.74. Wu made it two-straight wins as he scored a victory in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.18. Dean and Zajaczkowski finished in third and fourth position, while Mirrione came in fifth as an exhibition.
Erskine took to the pool next in the 200 Individual Medley and registered a time of 2:17.07, he was followed by Cannon and DeYoung as the trio combined for nine points in the event.
The one-meter diving was up next and saw both
Ryan Wood (Sparta, N.J./Blair Academy) and
Kurt Schieferstein (Lattingtown, N.Y./Chaminade) pick up their best career scores. Wood collected a 172.00 while Schieferstein led Maritime with a 179.10.
Once swimming action resumed, Truong got Maritime back in winning form with a sub-minute time in the 100 Butterfly with a 56.34. Schnebel bested a Lehman swimmer by one-tenth of a second for second place (1:00.21), while Rubino came to the wall in fifth with a 1:06.48. Dean,
Peter Skerys (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson), and Accetta collected three of the top four positions in the 100 Freestyle.
Cannon returned to the top of the leaderboard in the 100 Backstroke as he bested Katz by over a second (1:02.13). Rubino finished fourth with a 1:04.47. In the 500 Freestyle, Lewis came in second with a 5:31.27, just four seconds off the pace of the leader. Chilelli recorded a third place finish with a 5:50.91, Zajaczkowski finished fourth with 6:25.56.
In the three-meter diving, Wood also finished with his career-best score as he collected a 173.80 for a second place finish. Marino picked up a second place time with a 1:03.41, followed by Erskine at 1:06.04, while Lyon finished fourth at 1:09.48.
The Privateers swept the board in the freestyle relay to close out the night with Truong, Marino, Accetta and Wu earning the win with a 1:32.92. Lewis, Rubino, Schnebel and Skerys came in second with a 1:41.00, while Hoey, Gallagher, Pierce, and Zajaczkowski earned third place with a 1:46.28. Mirrione, DeYoung, Cannon and Lyon swam an exhibition and finished with a time of 1:45.31.
Maritime's Men's (7-0, 4-0 Skyline) and Women's (4-4, 3-2 Skyline) will return to league competition this Friday as the team travels to Newburgh, N.Y. to face-off with Mount St. Mary in the final swim meet before the winter break.
Last year, Mount St. Mary was the Maritime men's squad's closest competitor at the Skyline Championships, while the Knights women's team has won four consecutive Skyline titles.
