Â
"It was great to get this win for our seniors on senior day," said Head Coach
Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. "The team played well in all aspects of the game, and we'll really have momentum heading into 2016."
Â
Several of the seniors highlighted the afternoon for the Privateers, as Chilcott led the offense with 170 yards on the ground and also had two touchdowns, while completing five passes for 34 yards and had a touchdown through the air to Jones. Junior
Krystian Cardinal-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) had a touchdown run for the offense.
Â
Adding six more points on the afternoon was Dietrich, who had a perfect afternoon in the kicking department with four extra points. Dietrich added a 40-yard field goal to start off the afternoon before capping off the afternoon with a program record-setting 52-yard field goal with 13:22 left in the fourth quarter.
Â
For the second straight season, Maritime's defense put up its best-ever defensive performance as the unit allowed just 63 yards of total offense to the Bison. Leading the defensive effort was Knight, who recorded six tackles as did junior
Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside). Warrington added four stops, while Brunk and junior
Sam Feliciano (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) had three stops each. Feliciano and freshman
Payton Campbell (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) both had sacks, while sophomore
Garrett Stryzs (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) recorded one interception.
Â
Maritime won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half, the move paid off as Gallaudet ran four plays and lost yardage before punting to Maritime.
Â
The Privateer offense took over and saw the Privateers moved the ball just four yards before Dietrich kicked the ball through the uprights for the first points of the game. Gallaudet was forced to punt on its next drive as Warrington and Parker ended the drive to give the ball back to Maritime.
Â
The next drive saw the Privateers need just 10 plays to drive 75 yards, as the series was finished off by a 34-yard touchdown run from Chilcott to move Maritime ahead by a 10-0 score. The next series for the Bison resulted in a punt, with Maritime taking over possession once again near midfield.
Â
As play crossed into the second quarter, Chilcott got the period started with a 24-yard touchdown run. Three plays later, Chilcott hooked up with Jones to move Maritime ahead by a 17-0 score. The Privateers added another touchdown on its next possession as sophomore
Jacob Shinnick (Pleasanton, Calif./Granada) and junior
Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) chewed up chunks of yards for the Privateers. Cardinal-Charles finished off the drive with a 13-yard score to put Maritime up by 24.
Â
After receiving the opening kickoff in the second half, Maritime needed just two plays to reach the endzone as Chilcott got eight yards, but then added an 83-yard touchdown score to propel Maritime to a 31-0 advantage.
Â
Navaroli got in on the scoresheet with a tackle on the next Bison drive, which ended in a Gallaudet punt. Freshman
Severino Torelli (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) got in on the next drive, before Maritime called a timeout to pull off the offensive seniors for one last time.
Â
After a few punts, Maritime got back possession with 5:42 left in the third, with junior
Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) serving as the signal-caller. Torelli, junior
Joe Modica (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), and sophomore
Devin Kenny (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) all picked up yards on the drive. The drive looked as if it was short-circuited on a fumble that dropped Maritime into a 4th-and-25 situation, but the Privateers sent Dietrich out for a field goal attempt.
Â
Dietrich lined up for what could have been his final career field goal attempt, and he did not disappoint as the right-footed kicker sent a line drive through the uprights for a 52-yard field goal. The boot was the longest in Dietrich's career, and longest in program history, breaking his own 49-yard field goal a season ago against William Paterson.
Â
Freshmen quarterbacks
Sean Varela (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and
Joseph Butterworth (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each took over a drive of their own late in the fourth quarter before the end of the ballgame.
Â
With the win, Maritime picked up its fifth victory of the season against five loses with a 3-4 mark in league games. Gallaudet fell to 0-9 on the season, and will look ahead to the 2016 season with a very young but game-tested squad for the next season.
