Playoff Preview: Maritime to Meet Mount St. Vincent in Skyline First Round Matchup on Saturday

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team is heading back to the Skyline Conference Tournament for the ninth consecutive season. Following a season that saw the team record 12 regular season victories, the team looks to extend its current three-game winning streak into the postseason.
 
Maritime clinched the fourth seed based on its Skyline Conference record and will host fifth-seeded Mount St. Vincent on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. on Reinhart Field. For those unable to be in attendance, live stats of the match will be available on MaritimeAthletics.com/coverage.aspx.
 
Maritime outscored its opponents this season by an overwhelming margin of 42-24, while outshooting its opponents by a 144-96 clip.
 
A very experienced group has led Maritime to its success this season, with many members of its senior class spearheading the charge.
 
In goal, senior Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) came in after being selected to the 2014 Skyline All-Conference Second Team, and backed up his junior year performance with another stellar campaign.
 
Thus far on the season, Weber has amassed 1620:14 in goal, while yielding 23 goals and stopping 67 shots sent his way. Overall on the year, Weber registered a 12-win season while also recording five shutouts, as he had a 1.28 goals against average in 18 matches.
 
The defense has been a steady as senior Brian McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) and junior Andrew Barry (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz), and sophomore Brett Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) have been the mainstays on the backline for the squad and have anchored the defensive unit all season. While McKeever had one goal, Reilly contributed with two goals and two assists this year.
 
Making an immediate impact on defense in their first seasons at Maritime were sophomore Matt Smith (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore), and freshman Jack Feehan (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale). Smith played in all 18 of the team's game and was the squad's lone defender to do so. Feehan burst onto the scene as a rookie and netted two goals and had four assists.
 
Maritime's midfield unit has also been a strength of the team with junior Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) anchoring the crew as a defensive midfielder. Senior Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) has also played a key role for the midfield as he has started in eight of the 17 contests he has appeared in.
 
Moving up the field, Maritimes offensive-minded midfielders is led by senior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)), who has six goals and two assists in his last year with the team. Senior Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), and classmate Colton Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) have also put together strong offensive numbers.
 
Freshman Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and Billy Horgan (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) have added some youth to the experienced group. Gallt led the team with five assists this season, while Horgan had a nine-point year in his rookie campaign. Junior Demetri Geras (New York, N.Y./School of the Future) has also been a solid performer in his 13 games on the season.
 
Up front, Maritime's leading goal scorer in senior Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) has led the team with seven goals and 17 points while playing in all 18 contests. Junior Corey Cartano (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson) has transitioned well into a forward this season, with the former goalkeeper recording a pair of goals and three assists in his first year as a field player.
 
The Privateers will hook up with the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins for the second time this season, as Mount St. Vincent was one of just two teams to hand the Privateers a loss during the month of October by a 1-0 score on October 10.
 
The Dolphin win over the Privateers propelled Mount St. Vincent into a six-game winning streak that the team rides into Saturday's matchup. Overall on the year, Mount St. Vincent is 11-6-2, with a 5-3-2 record in Skyline Conference matchups.
 
Mount St. Vincent has a two-pronged attack with Kevin Jardines and Jair Magallan, with the pair combining for 21 goals and 13 assists to lead the Dolphin offense. Guy Horcasitas and Andrew Gomez both totaled 12 points on the year as well.
 
The Dolphin offense has put together a very strong season with 51 goals offensively, while yielding just 31 on the season. In the process, Mount St. Vincent has taken 188 shots, while the defense has allowed 107 shots thus far on the season.
 
Marcial Aguilar leads the Dolphin defense along with Jorge Quinones, and junior captain Alexi Aguilar. Augustine Ameruso has also been a key cog in the Mount St. Vincent defense this season.
 
In goal is junior David Melchor, who compiled a 1.50 goals against average and a .687 save percentage, while picking up 11 wins and two shutouts on 57 saves in 2015.
 
Recent history has shown that Maritime has won eight of their last nine matchups with Mount St. Vincent, as the only loss for the Privateers came just three weeks ago. Maritime will look to begin a new winning streak against Mount St. Vincent beginning with Saturday's quarterfinal matchup.
