THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost its first game on the newly renovated Reinhart Field, 3-2, in overtime against the City College of New York on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Privateers to 1-2 on the season, while CCNY also moves to 1-2.
Maritime scored the first two goals of the game, but it was two second-half penalty kicks called against the Privateers and an own goal in the first overtime that proved costly.
Junior captain
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) tallied both of Maritime's goals. The first came in the ninth minute on a header off of throw-in by senior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic). The ball beat CCNY's diving goalkeeper to the left corner. Chira-Farfan added to the lead with a blast on a free kick from 40 yards out in the 35th minute that put the Privateers ahead 2-0.
In the second half, City College was award a PK in the 59th minute and sophomore Anthony Scarallo converted to bring the Beavers to within one, 2-1. It didn't take long at all before the score became tied, as just 1:38 later, the Privateers were called for another foul in the 18-yard box and CCNY had its second PK of the half. This time it was sophomore Cesar Augusto Bullon that was called on to take it. Maritime junior keeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) guessed the position right, diving to his left, and it seemed he initially made the save, but the ball crept just over the goal line under him.
Each team had some solid chances the remainder of the half, the best coming for Maritime on a breakaway by junior
Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) in the 82nd minutebut his shot was just high. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, so regulation time ended with the score knotted up at 2-2.
The Beavers had the first chance of overtime, but their shot went just wide. Maritime applied some pressure and sophomore
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was able to fire a shot from the left side, but it was stopped by the CCNY keeper. In the 98th minute, with the ball deep in Maritime's defensive end, a blunder on defense led to an own goal when the Privateer defender headed the ball back and it went just over the reach Weber and trickled slowly into the net.
Shots in the game were exactly even at 19-19, and Maritime held the advantage in corners, 7-4. Both Weber and City College's Maxwell Berkow ended the game with eight saves.
The Privateers return to action on Wednesday night, Sept. 10, when they travel to take on arch-rival Kings Point at 6 p.m. at the Mariners' Brooks Stadium.
