THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season on Wednesday night, blanking cross-Bronx rival Lehman College, 1-0, at the Lightning's South Field. Head coach
Daniel Gwyther earned the first collegiate win of his career with the shutout.
Â
        Junior captain
Jon Dubowyk (Pennfield, N.Y./Pennfield) wasted little time putting the Privateers on the board, blasting a shot into the net off of Lehman keeper Jesus Marin just 54 seconds after the opening kickoff. Classmate
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) contributed to the tally with an assist. It was the first goal of the season for Maritime.
Â
Lehman turned on the pressure shortly after the opening goal and outshot the Privateers, 6-2, over a 15-minute span, but junior keeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made four saves and watched two other shots sail wide. Maritime had three shots that were turned aside by Marin, while Weber was forced to make two more saves the rest of the opening frame and the Privateers took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Â
Clear chances were limited in the early part of the second half until the 66th minute, when junior-transfer
Sebastian Marquez (ItagüÃ, Columbia/Lakeland (N.Y.)) fired a shot that was saved by Marin. Just one minute later, Weber was tested again, but made the save against Lightning senior Hugh Campbell. The Privateers cluing to the lead late into the game and Weber made two more saves to secure the shutout.
Â
The Privateer defense was strong tonight, helping lead to the clean sheet, and Weber finished with nine saves. Marin recorded five stops for the Lightning.

Maritime returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 6, in the squad's home-opener against City College of New York. Opening whistle is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the new and improved Reinhart Field. Live stats will be available at
