Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team tallied three unanswered goals in the second half of its Skyline Conference opener at Mount St. Vincent and escaped the Athletic Field at Marillac with a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers improve to 3-4 (1-0 Skyline) with the win, while the Dolphins fall to 3-4-1 (1-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Mount took advantage of an early turnover by Maritime in the box and freshman Dennis Reyes scored the first goal of the game in just the third minute of play. The Privateers would go on to outshoot the Dolphins, 8-5 in the half of action, but couldn't get one past sophomore keeper David Melchor, who made five stops in the frame.

In the second half, the Privateers took advantage of a defensive error by Mount St. Vincent and scored off of a throw-in by senior Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) that deflected into the net off a Dolphin player. That evened the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute.

Just under 10 minutes later, sophomore Michael Wood (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield) put Maritime ahead on a goal on a volley into the bottom corner that was assisted by Swinehart and sophomore Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). The Privateers added to the lead in the 88th minute when junior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) cashed in his team-leading fourth goal of the season off of, you guessed it, a throw-in by Swinehart.

The Dolphins responded in the 89th minutes with Reyes' second goal of the day, but it proved to be too little, too late, as the Privateers held on for the exciting victory.

In goal, junior keeper Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made five saves for the victory, while Melchor ended the night with six stops.

Maritime returns to action this Wednesday night, Sept. 24, when the Privateers welcome in Berkeley College for a 7 p.m. start at Reinhart Field.
